Rock of Ages

Saturday the 20th of February is Presbytery time for Sacramento. We will be voting for pastor commissioners for General Assembly so please pray for us.

I am posting an old hymn that we sung long ago in country church. The picture is of the country church I attended when I lived on a farm in Northern Missouri. The song is still both true and beautiful.

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in thee;
let the water and the blood,
from thy wounded side which flowed,
be of sin the double cure;
save from wrath and make me pure.
-
Not the labors of my hands
can fulfill thy law's commands;
could my zeal no respite know,
could my tears forever flow,
all for sin could not atone;
thou must save, and thou alone.
-
Nothing in my hand I bring,
simply to the cross I cling;
naked, come to thee for dress;
helpless, look to thee for grace;
foul, I to the fountain fly;
wash me, Savior, or I die.
-
While I draw this fleeting breath,
when mine eyes shall close in death,
when I soar to worlds unknown,
see thee on thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in thee.

Close to a town that has moved, Pattonsburgwhere I also lived at one time. Also Bethany and McFalls. Those towns are all in the North West almost on the Iowa line.

Viola,

Bethany is a pretty regular stop on the Twin Cities to KC run I do fairly regularly. I also did some work in Eagleville once upon a time. I was just curious.

Are you aware of Pattonsburg? The town that moved because it was flooded to the roof tops twice in one year. After that the people who made the movie "Ride with the Devil," used it so they could set some of the still standing buildings on fire.

Excellent hymn. Have been reading a biography of John Newton- "From Disgrace to Amazing Grace" by Aitken. Quite interesting, and Aitken focuses on Newton's relationship with Cowper. If you've not read it, I suspect you'd enjoy it.

grace & peace,
